Peruse my thoughts...
Have you had a chance to watch any of the hearing today? I did not watch all of it. I watched parts of it throughout the day and a sad day it was in America's History. Having been a school counselor for over 20 years I can tell you that girls do NOT report when they have been molested. I didn't for several months when I was 8 years old. But even at that when I told my mom she didn't believe me and told me not to tell my dad. The point is: Girls don't tell because they feel like they must have done something to "ask for it" whether it was dress provocatively ( they just thought they looked cute or hot ) gone into the wrong room at the wrong party (hey I have something to show you in the other room ) took a drink from the wrong person (Bill Cosby isn't the only one with access to drugs ) or simply went to sleep in one of the bedrooms ( and woke up with someone on her ) and so many other situations that barely touch the surface. What we are forgetting is that boys don't tell either. They feel like they are supposed to be tough so they should have been able to stop it, or that people will think they wanted it, or that people will make fun of them.
They result of not telling is that for many the incident lingers in the back of their mind and memory for the rest of their lives. Some can get over it and can move on and have a good life but others relive that event in dreams or flashbacks triggered by a completely unrelated incident. Some people don't remember because of the shock of what happened to them. It is as if their brain stores away the memory in order to protect itself and it isn't until years later that they realize what had happened.
Today's hearing was a travesty. A woman who had gone through years of counseling to deal with an event that happened when she was 15 was made to tell the "world" what happened in front of dozens of people, some sympathetic and some completely antagonistic and scornful. The fact of the matter is that none of US know what really happened and we never will. Only the two people involved remember and if it was a common event for one or the other they may not even remember because 'it was just another party...'
The real travesty though, comes in the fact that Democrats and Republicans again took sides and did not listen to what was being said on either side. I really worry about our children who are listening to this. Girls and boys are being taught that if they tell they will not be believed (I wasn't) and boys and girls are being taught that if a boy does something like this it is ok and just what boys do (and it's not).
This is NOT a democrat or republican Issue, It is a societal issue and it needs to be addressed. People are afraid that Judge Kavanaugh's life has been "ruined" by the accusations, but if Dr. Ford is telling the truth, her life was "ruined" a long time ago.
